I will tell you why this happens in a bit.
But if you clicked on this article you know how it feels to tell people about your goals.
You tell them, I will achieve,
- This
- This
- And that.
And then they are happy for you and you get the dopamine hit of achieving the goal before you even start!
So your brain thinks, ‘’What is the point of working hard when I already achieved the goal?’’
That tricks your brain into thinking you have already achieved it, so you won’t have much motivation left.
The chances are you are going to quit!
On the other hand, when you haven’t told anyone, your brain will tell you to get to work.
This isn’t by any means a guarantee of your success.
But telling people is the closest you can get to guaranteeing failure.
Except in very specific cases.
I remember telling people (when I was 14 years old) that I was going to start a business and become a millionaire.
They laughed at me.
All my friends laughed at me.
So I told them ‘’We’ll see’’
And I decided to do everything I could to prove them wrong.
Surprisingly I am very grateful they didn’t laugh at me, because if they encouraged me:
- I wouldn’t have the overwhelming urge to prove them wrong
- And I would have fallen into the trap I mentioned earlier, and I would have been another regular dude.
The moral of the story is, never share your goals, unless you are certain they will laugh in your face!
